Winter Wolf and Wildlife

Winter is a time of big animals (bison, elk, moose, bighorn sheep, wolf, mule deer, coyote) on big landscapes. Many birds have migrated away, leaving behind only the winter durable. Bears and ground squirrels are denned for the season.

The Northern Range of the Yellowstone Ecosystem harbors the greatest diversity and concentration of large, romantic, and highly visible wildlife anywhere during a North American winter. We see hundreds to thousands of bison and elk, packs of coyotes and wolves, herds of bighorn, mule deer and pronghorn. Eagle, raven, and magpie occur throughout the range.

The Northwest corner of Yellowstone National Park (access via Montana Highway 191, between Big Sky and the town of West Yellowstone) is a dramatic winter landscape of deep snow and majestic winter vistas and forests. We are still in the land of wolf and wolverine but we don't see the numbers of animals we see on the Northern Range. We simply get better snow! So it's an excellent place for secluded snowshoe walks, runs, as well as wildlife. For folks who like to be active (skiing or snowshoeing) the NW corner of Yellowstone is a unique and great wilderness. Snowshoeing this region, while a great adventure (even our half-days!) is not difficult and is appropriate for all ages and abilities. If you can walk, you can snowshoe! Level of difficulty is governed by your desires and abilities.
